Straight lines characterize the evident contemporary aesthetic, both in the architecture and the furniture pieces. Here, window walls provide a 180 degrees view of the city of stars, a mesmerizing landscape over the Los Angeles skyline.

FOYER

The welcoming area to this project, the Foyer serves as the red carpet for the main event. Quite literally, where a fully upholstered velvet armchair makes a true statement for the Entryway. Also, leaving a fabulous first impression are the wall lamps where elegance is present in every crystal. The contemporary appeal is completed by combining the eyecatching of Angra Sideboard with the Glance Mirror, both from Boca do Lobo. The Hollywood fantasy of the inspiration turns into reality through these magnificent and lush elements!

GET THE LOOK:
ANGRA SIDEBOARD

Bold yet elegant black and gold sideboard. The sharp body is fully covered in black high gloss, and it gently lies in an unexpected curved golden base conceived from hammered polished brass, inspired by the cliffs of the historical city of Angra do Heroismo in Azores island, Portugal.

GLANCE MIRROR

The unique beauty of this round mirror comes from daring to risk and challenge conventional design through the finest craftsmanship.

LIVING ROOM

Sharing the area with generous open space for Living and Dining, this fantastically decorated Living Room is quite exuberant in its details. Metals were the focal point for this room, where the matching golden stripes on the walls and ceiling mix in unison with the lines of the furniture and lighting pieces.

GET THE LOOK:
LAPIAZ CENTER TABLE

A functional artwork conceived in three modules for unexpected combinations.

The contemporary vibe is noticeable not only by the decoration items but in the way the furniture was carefully curated for this area. Almost no organic shapes, just clean and straight lines. Standing out on its own, is the remarkable Imperfectio Sofa by Boca do Lobo, where its golden irregularities and flaws over the manual hammered brass expose the beauty of imperfection.

DINING ROOM

This Dining Room is paramount to the contemporary luxury aesthetic. We can almost imagine a VIP dinner party, with the top names in the movie or music industry getting together around the fantastic dining table. Lapiaz Console brings the noir hues and Hera Suspension Lamp the golden finishes. Supremely decorated to the finest detail, don’t you think?

GET THE LOOK:
LAPIAZ CONSOLE

Finding beauty in the most unexpected places, this contemporary console is inspired by authentic karst formations created by surface dissolution, freezing or thawing of dolomite rocks.

HERA SUSPENSION LAMP

The lighting fixture is moulded to resemble the features and look of a golden branch. Handmade from cast brass, this chandelier has an organic shape and intricate contemporary details to create an adjustable arrangement in a harmonious ensemble.

MASTER BEDROOM

Taking much inspiration from the words “less is more”, this quiet and soothing Master Bedroom is the culmination of all the previous areas, but in a much cleaner and softer way. Wooden panels transform this otherwise ordinary and simple room into a masterful and glamorous division. The idyllic place for a well-deserved rest.

MASTER BATHROOM

Straight out of a scene from an academy award movie, this Master Bathroom exudes lust and opulence. Every detail in this ambience almost looks like the set from a blockbuster movie. The use of white marbles contrasting with the gold finishes produces such a powerful and deluxe feeling, that no one will be indifferent to.

When entering this impressive room, a piece immediately grabs your attention: The fabulous Diamond Bathtube from Boca do Lobo x Maison Valentina. The bathtub stands on its platform, resembling a unique piece in a museum, while the matching of the chandelier with the wall lamps, cohesively creates a deluxe aura.

Milan Design Week has made its return. Marcel Wanders MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2022

After two years, the famous Milan Design Week has made its return. Marcel Wanders studio had the honour to introduce new, bold and unique designs in collaboration with FENDI CasaFLOSUp To You AnthologyFIAMNatuzziDevon&Devon and Sahrai.

Designs by the studio were also to be seen at MoooiQeeboo, and Objets Nomades exhibition by Louis Vuitton.

Marcel Wanders studio’s first collection for FENDI Casa subtly translates signature design elements found in the FENDI fashion archives into an elegant interior setting. By adapting a metaphysical approach in the creation of these pieces, inspiration was drawn from Italian heritage, embracing its rich art, culture and craftsmanship using locally sourced glass, stone and textiles. This extensive collection consists of two mirrors, dining table, arm and lounge chairs, bed, sofa, as well as a sub-collection of lamps, exquisitely crafted with Murano glass.

The studio also proudly presented its newest creation for FLOS, Skynest. By weaving filaments of light, this unique lamp seamlessly combines both elegance and innovation.

Delicate textile tubes, integrated with LED lights, reminiscent of thread, are woven throughout the design of the lamp; creating a unique element of surprise, which challenges the bulb lighting archetype. This beautifully innovative lamp is available in four different colourways and in various models including Pendant, Ceiling, Wall and Ceiling to Floor variants.

“We are poets, secretly engineering” – Marcel Wanders, Creative Director, Marcel Wanders studio on Skynest Marcel Wanders studio also launched two new handbags in collaboration with Up To You Anthology: New Classic and Bouquet. This innovative brand creates unique designer bags originated from the creative energy of the most visionary talents in Architecture, Design and Art worldwide, and handcrafted by the best Italian artisans.

The Cristaline dining table designed for FIAM exemplifies subtle beauty and grace by experimenting with the unique technology of melting and forming glass, to create an intricate surface pattern which illustrates geometry and nature through a complex floral pattern translated to an elegant dining table.

Marcel Wanders studio celebrated the launch of its fourth collaboration with Natuzzi. Presenting the Adam collection, with a focus represented by the Adam sofa, born from the desire to integrate sustainable materials with a timeless design inspired by Puglia. Part of the Adam collection are also a dining table and coffee tables made from wood, giving a natural and handcrafted appearance to complete a luxury interior setting.

“We designed this collection not only to reflect on the Puglia region’s natural elements and rich artisanal history, but to give the Natuzzi sofa a second life” – Gabriele Chiave, Creative Director, Marcel Wanders studio The Secret Gardens collection designed for Devon&Devon was created with a holistic and poetic creative approach.

Individual elements are all dressed in a seamlessly flowing design and, when placed together, create remarkably immersive settings that produce dreamlike spaces. The first collection in collaboration with the brand consists of wallpapers and small and large ceramic decor slabs (all available in an array of different shades and patterns), a vanity table, three mirrors and a range of ceramic accessories.

“Devon&Devon collection aims to seamlessly connect the words between surfaces and objects, creating a magical illusion of being in a dream made of flowers and nature”. – Gabriele Chiave, Creative Director, Marcel Wanders studio

The limited edition Kaleido of Life Collection for Sahrai, includes three finely handknotted rugs in natural silk and wool. In this collection, Marcel Wanders studio had the freedom to design on a large scale artwork to create impressively massive textile pieces. The rugs are inspired by the natural elements: air (Lush), water (Allure) and earth (Charm). Each of the three elements is depicted through a computerized graphic creativity, which plays with the sensuality of natural forms.

design museums, including Centre Pompidou FR; Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, US; Metropolitan Museum of Art, US; Museum of Arts and Design, New York, US; Museum of Modern Art, US; Pinakotheke der Moderne, Munich, DE; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, NL; Oita Prefectural Art Museum, JP among others.

Regarded by many as an anomaly in the design world, Marcel Wanders studio has made its mission to “create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true.” The studio’s work excites, provokes, and polarises, but never fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and singular quest to uplift the human spirit, and entertain.

The studio’s chief concern is to bring the human touch back to design, ushering in a ‘new age of design’, in which designer, craftsperson and user are reunited. In this process, Marcel Wanders studio defies design dogma, preferring instead to focus on holistic solutions rather than the technocratic. In this universe, the coldness of industrialism is replaced instead by the poetry, fantasy and romance of different ages, vividly brought to life in the contemporary moment. www.marcelwanders.com

Stephan Tahy to remain Duravit CEO for five more years

The Supervisory Board of Duravit AG has prematurely extended CEO Stephan Tahy’s contract with effect from 1 July, 2022

  • Tahy will continue to help Duravit realize its potential in future
  • Changes will be shaped collectively as a team
  • Record turnover of €604 million last year
  • Becoming a climate-neutral business as a corporate objective

Hornberg, 1 July, 2022: At its meeting on June 28, the Supervisory Board of Duravit AG prematurely and unanimously extended the contract of CEO Stephan Tahy for five more years until 2027. This is not only due to the success of the last financial year, but also because they are convinced that Stephan Tahy and his Executive Board colleagues, Thomas Stammel and Martin Winkle, working with the team as a whole, have been able to build on the successes of the past and will continue to realize Duravit’s full potential in future.

In July 2020, Tahy became CEO of a family business that employs a global workforce of about 7,000 and operates in over 130 countries. His contract was due to run until 2023. “I’m delighted about the early contract extension and the show of trust in me,” said Stephan Tahy. “Only by working together can we achieve our ambitious goals. That’s why we want to take advantage of the fair winds and shape the necessary changes together.” The CEO intends to blaze bold trails in future in collaboration with his Executive Board colleagues and the workforce.

Duravit on a growth trajectory and a climate mission

With Stephan Tahy at the helm as CEO, Duravit managed to generate record turnover of €604 million in the last financial year, a year-on-year increase of some 28 percent. “Despite the difficult circumstances on the global economy, we’re closing in on the billion mark,” he explained.

Duravit remains on track for success: In the first quarter the company generated total turnover of 172.1 million euros(2021: €140 million euros). Growth, including the one-off effect of the Bernstein consolidation, stood at 22.9 percent.

Additionally, Duravit has embarked on a comprehensive climate mission: by 2045 the company from Hornberg in the Black Forest wants to be an entirely climate-neutral business at global level without relying on offsetting or trading CO2 emissions. “None of this would be possible without the team effort of our employees who recreate this success every day afresh despite challenging and changing prevailing conditions. These are the best prerequisites for implementing our corporate vision of ‘We upgrade people’s everyday life’ for all of our stakeholders Board”, says Tahy.

We were always keen on creating a firm where we could direct the design narrative and enjoy the process of being involved in every aspect of the design of a project. Over the years, our team of 5 has gradually become an efficient team of over 75 Architects and Designers, however, our role has still remained the same. We enjoy the impact of a different day at work, one that is spontaneous, thrilling, and incredibly rewarding.

We have a well-defined process when it comes to the style of any project and it is intimately connected to the client with whom we are collaborating. Our personal preference has always been to create something fresh and contemporary with a global, timeless appeal.

What makes a design timeless? Which are the key elements?

I think if there are factors that you had to consider, it would be quality, finish, and design, at the end, at the very core that’s what makes a timeless design. We have clients that came back to us, probably for the next office and the next house, our entire work is connected to what we’ve done when we started, so I think that tells us we are on the right path.

Krupa Zubin

How would you describe the relationship of your Studio with your audience? Do you have a special way of communicating/advertising your work? It’s important to get feedback from external sources?

Our constant driving force is the belief and faith our clients have in us and a lot of our work is from repeat clients. Receiving a call from an old client to start brainstorming on something fresh that inspires us is always a treat. Instagram is also a place to share glimpses of work and life, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We feel that our best advocates are our clients, and that ‘social media,’ when used sparingly, is an excellent tool. Working and constantly learning with great clients and brands ensures that you are always performing at your best potential. There is a lot of optimism in the air.

Krupa Zubin

What would you say is the trend at the moment in the design world – creatively speaking?

Our homes have become the main settings of our lives: where we need to unwind and energize ourselves at the same time. We have been forced to slow down and spend time in our homes, this drives a strong desire to really create a space that reflects our inherent selves both aspirational and based on comfort.

How would you describe the typical client of your Studio? What are the main things they ask for? How do you build a professional relationship with them?

Our clientele is diverse and our strength is the method of transparent communication we have with everyone involved in a project. Every first meeting sets up the tone for a project while it helps in the narrative of the design philosophy for the project. Nowadays, social media is so relevant, and when clients come to us, they already have an idea of what they want to build. To us, it’s about creating a real journey for every project, so we’re really close with the design process, and we like to look at a design in every aspect possible, from finishings, materials, collaborations, and artists. In the end, it all comes together when you see the final outcome.

What are your main inspirations in the Design World? And how do they influence your work?

Our passion for travel, reading, and a desire to stay on top of what’s going on in the design industry has opened up new doors for us. We strive to draw inspiration from the diverse experiences we have while traveling. We source extensively from London, Milan, Paris, and Tokyo. Every trip is such an educational trip for us. Movies are also a big source of inspiration, I watch a movie every day, and when you watch a multi-language movie is a great way to understand the design that’s happening in the country. For example, when you watch an anime you are really understanding the Japanese culture, and you can connect to it so well.

Krupa Zubin

How do you approach a hospitality project versus a residential project?

We approach each project based on its location, context, the need of the project, and client specifications. When it comes to hospitality and residential projects, there seems to be a confluence of ideologies. Most of the hospitality projects that we undertake want the experience to feel warm and homely and at the same time, residential homes want to attain the practicality and comfort of premium hospitality spaces. As we work mainly in the luxury sector. it is a great space to be working on and we enjoy the constant unraveling within these categories.

Do you have a favorite project or story about one of your projects?

Every project is clearly associated with anecdotes and each can be a series of stories. All these events come together and help to culture the final project. the relation to clients, materials, and conversations, makes every project an enjoyable experience and milestone. Furthermore, the next two years are also going to be very exciting for the projects that we will complete.

How did you deal with the Pandemic Crisis? Did it change the day-to-day situation of your work? Or did it affect any project in specific?

The pandemic has given us time to introspect, an opportunity to regroup and improve on efficiencies. As a matter of fact, we kept all our projects on hold and restrained ourselves from working from home. We encouraged the teams to just use the time at hand to just stay calm and keep a positive frame of mind. We did not have a single zoom session with our team and just felt that in such uncertain times we needed to support everyone from our team not just financially but also from a viewpoint of being optimistic and ready for the time to come. We had the opportunity to work on and actually design our new studio with a lot of time at hand. It is a new space that we could actually mold as per new requirements and needs that the pandemic also taught us. Personally, we also optimized the use of resources and concentrated more on designs, concepts, and mood boards, all while rethinking how we operated.

Krupa Zubin

Where did you find the resilience to keep working during the most difficult periods of the pandemic? Was it your clients and ongoing projects?

We needed to be patient and make the most of the time at hand. The total engagement of each member of our team with complete faith and support from our clients kept us continuing and flourishing.

Krupa Zubin

Could you describe a few highlights that came from working so much during the Covid crisis?

We spent the time making our processes more structured. Crafted our way into a new era of human connection through the positive use of social media. Besides, it puts a new lens on the organization of the studio and allowed us to dedicate ourselves to enhancing our company’s culture. Finally, set up our new studio space and used the free time to have it up and running in 5 months.

Krupa Zubin

What do you think will be the focus in the design world in the future, especially when this Covid crisis comes to an end?

The cornerstone of this new world will lie in the framework of resilience, humility, empathy, wellbeing, technology and environmentally profound spaces that instill a sense of reassurance and comfort.

Krupa Zubin

Are you working on anything new at the moment? What’s the inspiration behind that project?

What are the main challenges when it comes to a corporate design project?

It is also about time, the kind of time you take to develop a corporate project is probably much faster. We have done corporate projects for developers, investment bankers, marketing companies, and so on. So I think is such a personal thing, and after doing our own working space, we realized that you’re able to give so much more to the team space. Besides, I believe it’s about well-being and empathy.

Boca do Lobo’s essence is connected with the high values of craftsmanship. What’s the Studio’s view on craftsmanship pieces?

The reason why we love collaborating with Boca Do Lobo is for their remarkable pieces with a distinct essence and detailed craftsmanship. Also, Boca Do Lobo’s pieces have a unique synthesis of traditional sensibilities with contemporary designs that are timeless creations. We have always seen that these pieces add a great artistic element to a project. More than recommending a product, we recommend the philosophy behind the product. As designers, that is what we value about design companies, and why we get excited about Boca do Lobo.

Interview with Cecilie Manz

Interview with Cecilie Manz

Sheer coziness for that feel-good factor in the bathroom

Since the introduction of the Luv series, Nordic style has become a firm fixture in the bathroom. Danish designer Cecilie Manz’s minimalist design language invokes the Scandinavian concept of living for a brand-new sense of wellbeing. Carefully conceived materials that also appeal to the sense of touch emphasise the gentle forms and strict geometry. Perfectly harmonized color combinations round off the overall picture.

What emotion do you associate with the bathroom range Luv that you designed for Duravit?

For me, Luv is about sheer coziness for the perfect feel-good factor – natural, uncomplicated, and unobtrusive.

What’s most important to you in a bathroom?

The bathroom is one of the most intimate rooms and what matters to me are qualities like “clean, “functional”, and “comfortable”.  Everything should be hygienic and low-maintenance, it should work well and at the same time I want the materials, colors, and the overall ambience to exude a sense of wellbeing. In the bathroom I enjoy my “every day spa moment”.

The colors and surfaces that you’ve selected for the bathroom series Luv radiate natural warmth while simultaneously managing to appear contemporary. Where do you get your inspiration?

In the bathroom you often find cool and clear colors. Because Luv has a very pure design, it was important for me to create a cozy and welcoming component using subtle, natural tones. I often find inspiration for colors in nature – I always have a couple of pebbles in my bag.

What were the biggest challenges for you in designing furnishings for the bathroom?

I’m not sure if it makes such a big difference whether you’re designing a piece of furniture for the bathroom, the living room, or the kitchen. The design process involves the same approach and we go through the same mechanisms. At the same time, you have a greater responsibility to a certain extent: for me it feels as though each individual object that I design in the bathroom is tailor-made for the specific person buying it. That might be because each object in this room is so important. For instance, you might have various chairs in your home and can choose which one to use at any given time. You arrange your home how you want and are constantly moving things around. That’s not so easy in the bathroom. That’s why I also think that people’s decisions are a lot more conscious when selecting bathroom furniture.

Do you believe that people’s wishes in terms of bathroom furniture are changing?

It seems that bathrooms are constantly getting bigger. On the other side there is also a need for tiny, highly efficient bathrooms. In any case we expect the level of comfort enjoyed in the rest of the home to be part of bathroom, too: more warm colors, natural materials, coziness alongside inventive solutions for keeping it clean and using less water.
