Few buildings dominate the central London skyline like Centre Point. Tottenham Court Road’s modernist tower has had a few lives so far and its latest incarnation, as a luxury penthouse, restored with care and consideration by Conran and Partners, is breathing new life to the much-loved icon. Now, the Grade II listed, high-end scheme, has revealed its coveted penthouse interiors, offering a glimpse of its spaces and magnificent London views.

‘We wanted to create something which is completely different from anything else in the world,’ says Almacantar property director Kathrin Hersel. ‘We’ve liaised closely with English Heritage ever since we bought the building in 2011, and they have been very supportive of our sensitive approach. Due to its scale, rarity and grandeur, it seems fitting that the penthouse is the final piece of the Centre Point development to complete.’

The luxury penthouse spans some 700 sq m and occupies the 33rd and 34th floors of the tower. British interior design house Spinocchia Freund, headed by founder and creative director Brigitta Spinocchia Freund, was invited to dress the space, which includes several living areas, as well as a large bar, dining room, cinema, music room, and a secret wine tasting room.

Private spaces are tucked on one side, although are just as luxurious and generous, as the more public parts of the luxury penthouse. The interiors feature brands like Alice Temperley and Pierre Frey, as well as an array of bespoke designs in furniture and fabrics – all inspired by the tower’s location and the surrounding Soho heritage and different aspects of the neighborhood’s daily life.

Stepping out from its main spaces and into the terraces that run across both its long sides, one gets a Hollywood-sign moment – only more urban, and in reverse, as the Centre Point sign’s large letters reveal themselves, fixed upon the railings.

Home of a New York-based jewelry designer and curator, this interior design project is a construction of white, minimalist architecture. The designer behind the project wanted to create a strong sense of earthiness and connection to nature with natural elements of metal and stone, contrasted with gold and silver, which is a reflection of the client’s identity. The result is a luxury home grounded in earth while inspiring an elegant “Zen” sensibility.

Metal and stone: What could be more appropriate motifs for the home of a jewelry designer?

In Tenafly, New Jersey, those natural elements form the basis for an interior design project that is luxurious yet inviting, dominated by a warm, neutral palette. “We wanted a strong sense of earthiness in the home,” says interior designer Jessica Gersten, noting the contrast to the newly built structure’s white, minimalist shell. “We wanted there to be a connection to nature. There is a little bit in every single room.”
A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project (8) A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project 8

It was one mandate of her clients: Danielle Gregory, a designer and curator of jewelry collections for private clients, and her husband, Troy Gregory. Further inspiration for the exclusive design came from the Amangiri resort in the Utah desert—a commanding arrangement of geometric concrete planes that artfully play off the region’s rugged beauty, decorated with items in natural materials, hues, and textures. This may seem an unlikely influence for an interior design project in suburban New Jersey, but for the Gregorys, the resort’s organic principles and monumental scale created a sense of serenity they aimed to replicate.

A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project (15) A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project 15

In this interior design project that sensibility can be seen in the bright family room, where caterpillar-like Togo sofas by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset are covered in a charcoal and white fabric from Donghia that gives the appearance of stone—an allusion that’s mirrored in the mineral pattern of the custom Tibetano rug. The connection to nature is enhanced via a link to the outdoors through a limestone-clad loggia, which can be enclosed with mesh screens and heated for indoor-outdoor living in the fall.

A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project (6) A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project 6

In the modern living room, striped Armani Casa wallpaper gives the feeling, Gersten notes, of being “in a clamshell.” The split Minotti Hamilton sectionals and Mushroom City drum tables of varying heights and diameters, in a combination of brass and blackened-pewter finishes, are strewn about in a way that activates the space for a dynamic, lounge-like effect.

A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project (12) A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project 12

For the New York-based interior designer, the Tenafly home was a chance to dig in on a large, ground-up residence—by architect Anthony Minichetti and built by Chris Lombardo of Rockridge Construction Management—after a series of Manhattan apartments and one previous project in Tenafly with the Gregorys, decorating their “starter home.” Gersten came to interiors following a fashion career with Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani that allowed her to hone her sense of color balance, texture, proportion, and overall vision.

“In fashion, it’s about how textures, colours and proportions come together in one outfit. The same goes for interiors: playing with the scale of a room and how all the different proportions of the furniture speak to each other, and the texture of the rug and the upholstery and having the right balance of hard items and soft items,” she says. “So a little bit of each and not too much of any one thing.”

That philosophy is evident in the elegant gentleman’s den with a moody charcoal palette, where tree trunk–shaped brass-covered center tables by Boca Do Lobo and a grey onyx bar offer an earthy contrast to a sartorial tufted A. Rudin sofa covered in lustrous, metallic fabric.

The various themes reach an apex in the contemporary dining room. There, matte surfaces are galvanized by a showstopper chandelier of polished nickel, brass, and bronze custom-designed by London-based Tom Kirk, with significant input from decorator and client. The glamour of the chandelier, herringbone wood floors, Robert Polidori photo of Versailles, and masonry fireplace create an aura of formality. Still, it remains an inviting space, with its unexpected ’70s-style chairs from Living Divani and homey, organically shaped ceramics by Gilles Caffier.

A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project (2) A Modern And Ecclectic Interior Design Project 2

The kitchen design is a similar study in taupe, accented by high-gloss cabinetry, striated stone surfaces and amber lighting by Studio Van den Akker. The chrome-and-leather Arete bucket chairs are another subtle ’70s reference—a nod to Danielle’s fondness for interiors from James Bond movies of that period—also seen in the vintage Pierre Paulin chair in her teenage son’s bedroom. Throughout, the pervading sense is one of warmth.

Zaha Hadid Architects loves to come up with a modern architecture structure that truly defies the laws of standard contemporary design and stands out even in the middle of nowhere. Zaha Hadid Architects has designed a modular housing project for an island near Honduras with curved roofs and rounded balconies that can be customized by residents. Roatán Próspera is a residential community intended for Roatán, a Caribbean island off the coast of Honduras.

Set to break ground later this year, the complex will be a modular construction composed of timber-framed residences with curved palapa roofs, expansive terraces with rounded balconies, and green space, designed as a reference to the area’s traditional building and luxury design techniques. A creation by Zaha Hadid Architects that meets the island’s dreamy details, beginning in the sand-hues that are on the residential building and ending in the modern architecture structure’s wavy lines that resemble the ocean.

“This digital platform adapts varying configurations of standardised parts to create individual residences that suit each homeowner,” the firm added.

In the proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects, Roatán Próspera’s modules will be fabricated off-site and transported using local networks to cut back on carbon emissions, and also to prevent harm to wildlife on the site.

Through the interactive platform, residents select the location and size of their personalized unit using “voxels”, the name for the three-dimensional volumes of occupational and exclusion right space granted to the homeowner with their selection. As part of the process, users choose their unit’s layout and can select from a number of furniture sets and modules, including walk-in wardrobes and conversation pits, or connect with local supplies to modern design pieces.

“The house had such a strong point of view when we entered the project,” says New York-based designer Sara Story of the classic shingle-style property, which was originally designed by renowned architecture firm Shope Reno Wharton in 1996.

For this luxury home, the designer began by knocking down walls and consolidating rooms to allow light to penetrate the house’s interior, replacing some of the more masculine wood finishes with white plaster to establish an elegant, timeless look that leans more on European minimalism than old-school American grandeur. Sara Story is known for her admirable love for modern art incorporated into contemporary design. A combination that never goes out of style.
