During World War II, the old dining room of the Langham Hotel in Paris was bricked up to hide it from the Nazis because it housed a work of art created in 1898 by the architect Emil Hurtré and painted by Jules Wielhosrki.

Respect for this masterpiece was to be the linchpin of the project, but it was imperative that it be restored as it deserved. To do this, they brought together the best craftsmen, mirror makers, painters and decorators who were ready to once again give this jewel the splendor of times gone by.

This historical and aesthetic pattern inspired the studio, accustomed to creating elegant and special environments, to play on the contrast between the ancient and the extremely contemporary, “a love game between sobriety and eccentricity”, as they say themselves, repainting the imposing work in the spirit of ancient times in shades of green and bronze.

Saturated colors and modern furnishings contrast with the industrial ceiling and black and minimalist exterior. Art Nouveau-inspired carpets and Art Deco motifs, all a vivid nod to the city’s rich design history.

Returning for an unusual September event, Design Miami/Basel presents some of the best contemporary design, for an edition based on an exploration of ‘human nature’ through curated booths and large-scale installations at Messe Basel.

This year’s presentations really offer an insightful snapshot of the current design market,’ says Jennifer Roberts, CEO of Design Miami. For the first time, the fair will be shoppable online through new initiatives launched in the past year that expand Design Miami’s scope and reach.

Design Miami/Basel 2021 theme: Human Nature

landscape shylight art basel ossip 1024x628

Gallerists and designers responded to the 2021 edition’s theme of ‘Human Nature’, devised by curatorial director Aric Chen. It’s a theme, he explains, that explores ‘how we might rethink the relationship between humans, nature, and human nature. The question of sustainability and planetary survival is not simply technical, but also cognitive, cultural and philosophical. As it becomes increasingly clear that human-centric worldviews and approaches are no longer tenable, we want to explore how design offers possibilities for reimagining our relationship with non-human beings and intelligence in more viable ways.’

shylightweb1 1024x721

The theme’s impact is evident from the fair’s entrance, where installations include Studio Drift’s ‘Shylights’, a series of multi-sensory lighting pieces inspired by the phenomenon known as nyctinasty, the movement of some plants as they respond to the onset of darkness.

Among projects responding to ‘Human Nature’ is also Mathieu Lehanneur’s ‘State Of The World’ display, a showcase of anodised aluminium sculptures representing population pyramids of different countries across the world. Using data, each sculpture represents the birthrate, life expectancy and history of over 140 countries. ‘In this very particular moment in our history, I wanted to be able to embody humanity in its entirety; to be able to crystallise the large and the complex through objects,’ says Lehanneur.

The Elevator by Crosby Studios founder, Harry Nuriev

Crosby Studios founder Harry Nuriev presents a metallic furniture composition inspired by the aesthetic of a corrugated steel-clad elevator. Nuryev explains his fascination with the elevator, a symbol of passing through different realities, connecting spaces: ‘It’s a place where you get to be a kid again and press all the buttons, the destination unknown,’ he says. The space is fitted with silver modular furniture comprising a sofa, an armchair, and an ottoman.

An expert in West Coast minimalism, Laguna Beach-based Peter Blake makes its Design Miami/Curio platform debut, presenting its first contemporary design showcase, with a site-specific, immersive installation by Amsterdam-based Latvian designer Germans Ermičs. Titled ‘Shaping Color’, the collection features new interpretations of Ermičs’ colour-driven furniture designs in glass, in new chromatic compositions ranging from blue to yellow. The installation, says Blake, hopes to elicit ‘a phenomenological viewer experience. We hope viewers will take away a newfound appreciation for Ermičs’ focus on aesthetics and material and their relationship with surrounding environments.’

The moment fashion designer Pierre Hardy and his husband Christopher Turnier (CEO of Hardy’s eponymous brand) set foot inside the Seine-gazing 17th-century hôtel particulier on Île Saint-Louis, they knew it would be their home. Vincenzo de Cotiis was the couple’s obvious choice for revamping such a historic location.

Even totally empty the approximately 2,000-square-foot apartment was bursting with life—elaborate mythological frescoes covered almost every inch of its soaring, nearly 15-foot ceilings. Apollo, robed in crimson, harp in hand, looked down upon the entrance hall. In the living room, Juno, wife of Jupiter, and Aeolus, the Greek god of wind, lounged in the clouds, while Aurora, Roman goddess of dawn—resplendent amid a magnificent medley of cherubs and horses—presided over another room. The masterworks, attributed to the artist Bon Boullogne, best known for his easel paintings found at Versailles and the Louvre, were a serious selling point.

Hardy, a creative director at Hermès who also designed shoes for Dior and Balenciaga before founding his own brand of high-concept kicks, had always decorated his own homes. But for this place, so steeped in history, the couple called on the Milan-based Vincenzo De Cotiis—whose work they had long admired—to usher the interiors into the 21st century.

Architecturally, there was what Turnier calls “a big cleaning.” They removed additions from the apartment’s most recent update in the 1970s and restored it to something closer to its original. Original parquet floors, elaborate bas-reliefs, and carved mouldings were refurbished. But Vincenzo De Cotiis balanced that 17th-century classicism with distinctly modern touches: coating walls in plaster, cladding the petite galley kitchen in matte black fibreglass, lining floors in travertine. Perhaps most significant, silvered brass wainscoting was added to many of the rooms, which, along with a slew of mirrors, new and old, could reflect natural light as well as the surrounding architectural wonders.

Vincenzo De Cotiis took pains to create a home that would mesh with Hardy and Turnier’s lifestyle. The couple preferred spaces that could transform, day to day, so Vincenzo De Cotiis carved out a series of salons—large, transitional areas for working, relaxing, eating, and entertaining—where they spend the most time.

The couple’s personal things lean rather minimalist, making them excellent foils to a handful of 18th-century antiques and slick custom furniture pieces designed by Vincenzo De Cotiis. In the bedroom, a cherub hovers in the clouds above prints by Sol LeWitt and a monumental custom bed Vincenzo De Cotiis made of hand-painted fibreglass. In the grand salon, custom brass-and-fibreglass tables mix with 18th-century armchairs, a silvered brass sofa, and marble 1960s lamps by Tobia Scarpa. The Daniel Arsham painting that gazes out from above the sofa feels like an apt metaphor for the whole place: history, refracted through a modern lens.

Hardy and Turnier found their creative match in Vincenzo De Cotiis. He was happy to spend long hours discussing the precise shade of black leather for the living-room sofa and recommended hand-painting a window-side sofa’s upholstery fabric to perfectly reflect the colour of the Seine.

Espacio Nometri
