The next generation of interior designers is utterly thriving in the modern design world. With the freshest interior design ideas and the most creative minds, the names that we are about to mention are pushing the boundaries of beauty and leaving their mark when it comes to 2021 trends. Let’s meet them!

Noz Nozawa, San Francisco

“Life is more beautiful and more livable when nothing is perfect,” says Nozawa, who founded her firm, Noz Design, in 2014. “I like deliberate imperfection, deliberate asymmetry, and messing things up a bit.”

“The hardest thing is to do simple, but that’s what we love: simple and smart,” says Adair Curtis (opposite, left) of the decorating, staging, and product-design studio that he co-founded with Jason Bolden, his celebrity fashion-stylist husband.

“Everything in a room should be essential, and the space should have a story, with furnishings and art pulled from what the clients enjoy or what has been passed down to them.”

He relocated to Charleston and opened a short-lived antique shop where the ever-changing decors launched his career. “I’d rather be thought of as a collector than a designer”.

After receiving her master’s in architecture from Columbia University, the French-born talent landed her first job working for an architecture studio that was, at the time, collaborating on a project with Philippe Starck, whose attention to detail would shape Brion’s perspective.

By 2016, they were officially in business together, building an impressive list of clients (Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss, NFL players Josh Bynes and Bobby Rainey) with bold, personality-driven modern design interiors, among them a glam, purple-lacquer karaoke room for Burruss’s poolhouse.

Guided by site and context, Hunter’s incisive eye lends a sense of history and gravitas to modern, white-box spaces while animating traditional rooms with a vivid, contemporary design spirit. Five years ago, he opened Tienda X, an experimental Houston gallery of art and design, with architect Michael Landrum, a frequent collaborator who shares his office. When it comes to boho modern design interiors by Hamilton—a self-styled “environmental curator”—it’s a jungle in there. “Plants are a super-identifiable part of my aesthetic, but the foundation is always modern and clean-lined,” says the rising star, who got her start in the health-care industry, a job that demanded wellness-conscious furnishings, palettes, and, yes, plants.

¡Disfrutarla!

A partir del 17 de septiembre de 2020

New York and Shanghai-based designer Chris Shao staged an inaugural showcase of contemporary design via his new platform Objective Collection, set within a heritage house in Shanghai’s Xintiandi neighborhood. At Coexist art Exhibition, two seemingly incongruent elements – an old house and new contemporary art, now exist together under one roof. Viewers are invited to appreciate both the beauty and functionality of the objects, their differences becoming a metaphor for the essence of life.

This year there is something special: the redesign of the striking boutique crafted once again by acclaimed international interior architect Pierre Yovanovitch, who has a long-standing relationship with the villa and its associated festivals.

Candy Colored Creations Pierre Yovanovitch For Design Parade Hy res

For art and architecture lovers, Hyères is a gem of the French Riviera and its Villa Noailles, in particular, a cultural trove. Originally built in the 1920s by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens for modern art patrons Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, the home is now a thriving arts center. This July, the Design Parade Hyères, an annual spotlight of up-and-coming talent held at the villa, celebrated its 15th anniversary.

After serving as jury president of the 2018 Design Parade Toulon, Pierre Yovanovitch redesigned the interior of the Hyères boutique in 2019 and again in 2020. For both iterations, Yovanovitch took Villa Noailles unique Cubist garden, which, he says, “occupies a strange space between garden and architecture,” as his launching point. Emulating the plot’s square and rectangular plantings are geometric, in-laid architectural elements, which give the boutique’s products a shadowbox surround.

“It is the type of place where one thinks that one should have been there at the time and been a part of the story” – Pierre Yovanovitch

Playing off of the garden’s use of primary colors, Pierre Yovanovitch transformed the interior with his signature candy-toned hues, its 2020 palette even bolder than the year prior.

“We incorporated variations of blue hues to add a sense of depth and tranquility to the space and create a serene backdrop to allow for the colorful vignettes to really stand out,” he says.

While a central table serves as a royal-blue focal point, the walls and accents are in more nuanced shades like muted turquoise, seafoam green, cotton-candy pink, and salmon.

“I wanted the layout and colours of the space to showcase the displayed design objects to their fullest potential while also offering a lively, joyful area for people to convene.”

Graziella Semerciyan gallery curated this year’s product assortment, which includes works by former Design Parade finalists, as well as those from sister festivals supporting fashion, photography, and more. The range of objects on offer includes dark ceramics made by Hélène Labadie that are inspired by those of 1950s masters like Jacques Blin, ecological swimsuits by Atelier Bartavelle x Twice Studio, and a new beach towel collaboration from Villa Noailles, artist Florent Groc, and La Serviette Paris.

The thoughtful mix of offerings is synonymous with Hyères itself, where myriad styles and eras delightfully coexist.

The city is a source of amazement; it is a true palimpsest of many periods, starting from the most ancient to medieval to the Belle Epoque and the modernist,” says Pierre Yovanovitch. “What I like most about it is that it has not been gentrified like many cities on the coast and has kept its quintessential multicultural Mediterranean character. In addition, it is located on one of the nicest parts of the coast with marvels such as Porquerolles a stone’s throw away.

When mother and son design duo, Kathleen and Tommy Clements, plus Waldo Fernandez, found out their next superstar client, was none other than supermodel of the world, Kendall Jenner, they didn’t know what to expect. For her Los Angeles home, being a 24-year-old supermodel, she was expected to have a “flashy” style, so when Kendall Jenner revealed a more bohemian and funky than the rest of her family, it came as a surprise.

“Being who she is, we thought Kendall might gravitate toward something more flashy, more va-va-voom. I think we were all thrilled to discover that she has taste beyond her years,” says Kathleen. Fernandez punctuates the sentiment: “There are plenty of people we know who have travelled extensively and been exposed to so much but don’t absorb anything. Kendall is different. She takes everything in and is confident about the things that resonate with her,” he says.

Kendall Jenner made few structural changes to the existing architecture of this Los Angeles home, instead of repurposing two of the five bedrooms into a pair of proper glam and fitting rooms. The living room perhaps best epitomizes the young model’s predilection for warm, organic textures, earthy tones, and eminently comfortable furnishings. With a cozy fireplace anchoring one end of the space, two broad sofas, stocked with a range of pillows in vintage textiles, offer ample room for visiting friends and family.

In contrast to the subdued palette of the furniture and finishes, Kendall Jenner’s collection of contemporary art—which includes works by Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, and Sterling Ruby—adds some serious jolts of color to the mix. Just off the entry, a signature James Turrell ovoid wall sculpture, animated by shifting, computer-programmed LED lights, greets visitors with a dreamy chromatic display.

Although Kendall Jenner confesses that she’s still new to the contemporary art world, Fernandez emphasizes that her interest is far from superficial. “Kendall wasn’t just checking off names on a list or blindly following the advice of an adviser. She picked things that meant something to her, things she had a gut reaction to,” the designer notes.

In the sitting area of her bedroom, a Tracey Emin neon sculpture faces off unexpectedly with a pair of 18th-century Italian painted door panels. “I grew up with those panels in the various homes we lived in. I asked for them when my mom was cleaning out one of her storage spaces. They bring me back to my childhood,Kendall Jenner says.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished here. This is the first home I’ve done completely, and I think it’s a genuine reflection of who I am and what I like,” Kendall Jenner says. “In the end, I’m still a young female in L.A., just trying to have some fun.”

For Kendall Jenner, who has spoken publicly about her battle with anxiety and panic attacks, the panels, like the arts-and-crafts room she installed in the Los Angeles home’s erstwhile home theatre, are simply one more facet of her efforts to fashion a soothing refuge from the hurly-burly of her professional life under the harsh spotlight of runway shows and paparazzi.

This 28,000 private residence designed by Khushalani Associates is located in Bicholi, an upcoming exurb of Indore (akin to what the Hamptons are to New York). By virtue of being a business leader in his industry, the client is a globe trotter, albeit with strong Indian values. The challenge was to cater to his Indian sensitivities, more
specifically, towards Vaastu compliance, while keeping his Ecumenical tastes in mind. The result is a
contemporary house with strong Indian roots, instagrammable interior design ideas yet livable, with functionality and aesthetics maintaining a fine balancing act.

“As a design studio, we are neither maximalists nor minimalists. We strongly believe that the décor of eachspace should be dictated by its use and the personality of its user. Each area in this house is an expression of this belief while attempting to keep an overall stylistic coherence.”

For this luxury home, the architecture firm designed that wood would be the basic inspiration for the entire project. Due to the earthy tones introduced into this contemporary house, it was logical that furniture design pieces in the same palette would be the perfect fit. Boca do Lobo‘s Infinity Console Table was the perfect match when the firm was looking for that statement piece that would give a striking effect when entering this incredible abode.

The architecture of the house was devised in such a way that it is adequate light for the areas; in a house that has wall to wall, full-height windows it becomes essential to control sunlight in a way that it is welcome and not something one struggles to shun.

“The South and West facades are more closed out housing services like the lift & staircase block and store and non-habitable spaces like the Kitchen, Pantry, and Bathrooms. Any rooms facing south and west had large overhanging decks and cavity walls. Terracing towards the north and the east to create a comfortable environment for the infinity pool and semi-formal seating areas around it.” states the architecture firm in charge of this contemporary home.
