Inspiration and Ideas brings you a select guide to the Best Architects Of All Time and their iconic creations. Architecture has always distinguished itself from other art forms because it plays a functional as well as an aesthetic role, offering shelter, of course, but also shaping our daily experiences.

Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí spent his entire career in Barcelona, where he built all of his projects, the most iconic creation being the 1883 cathedral known as La Sagrada Familia, still under construction today. Gaudí’s work would go on to have a tremendous impact on subsequent generations of modernists.

Frank Lloyd Wright

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations SolomonRGuggenheimMuseum

Wright revolutionized 20th-century architect, and his midwestern upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his sensibility and becoming a staple as one of the best architects of modern times. Inspired by the low-lying building that dotted the American plains, Wright created the Prairie House style as a reaction to the prevailing Victorian aesthetic, which emphasized dark decor, and busy embellishments both inside and out. In its stead, Wright employed clean geometries with an emphasis on horizontal planes. Later in his career, Wright would embrace curvilinear elements, a shift that found its most celebrated expression in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Mies Van der Rohe

354 seagram

Famously holding to the proposition that “less is more,” German architect Mies Van der Rohe stripped architecture to elemental geometric forms, pointing the way to Minimalism. He banished all traces of ornamentation, using the innate qualities of materials such as steel and plate glass to define the look of his buildings. One of his most iconic creations is the Seagram’s tower in New York.

Richard Rogers

Pompidou Center

When the Pompidou Center first opened in 1977, it was considered the epitome of a trend at the time known variously as High Tech and Structural Expressionism. British architect Richard Rogers was a leading proponent of the style. This building, designed as Paris’s central institution for Modern and contemporary art, suggests a structure turning inside out, with its heating and plumbing systems worn as the facade—which also features a glass-enclosed outdoor escalator climbing the height of the building.

Frank Gehry

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations el edificio guggenheim bilbao 1

This West Coast architect is undoubtedly one of the best architects in the world right now, thanks to his 1997 design for the Guggenheim Museum branch in Bilbao, Spain. Though Gehry was already well-established in his field as the auteur billowing forms that seem to defy gravity and the logic of conventional construction methods, The Guggenheim Bilbao remains the finest example of his iconic work.

Norman Foster

The Gherkin

A fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, British architect Norman Foster worked early in career as an associate of Buckminster Fuller, the noted visionary and inventor of the geodesic dome. The latter’s tessellated pattern of triangular forms must have made an impression on the young Foster since his most iconic creations feature similar surface treatments for their facades, The Gherkin, a commercial skyscraper in London’s financial district that opened in 2004.

Santiago Calatrava

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations Heintges WTCTransHub 13

The work of this Spanish architect has been described as Neofuturist, although sci-fi baroque might be closer to describing it. His buildings often resemble the ribcages of extinct robotic dinosaurs, if such things existed. His projects definitely attracted worldwide attention—and garnered a reputation for massive cost overruns. Nonetheless, there’s no denying that Calatrava is one of the best architects working today, as his most iconic creation—the Transit Hub for the World Trade Center—attests.

Zaha Hadid

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations 190311 18 31 50 5DSR7031

One of the few women to have risen to the level of starchitect—and the first ever to win architecture’s version of the Oscar, the Pritzker PrizeZaha Hadid was known for futuristic designs that employed curving, swooping lines more suitable for UFOs than buildings. Though she built extensively around the world, she has only one completed project—a luxury condo in Chelsea—in New York City.

Oscar Niemeyer

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations 1200px Congresso do Brasil

The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was one of the key figures in the development of the midcentury modernist design. Anticipating the work of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, Niemeyer employed bold curvilinear forms at a time when the boxy International Style reigned and Mies Van der Rohe’s proposition that “less is more” was the mantra of the architectural field. Niemeyer was part of the design team behind the U.N. Building in New York City, but his most famous creation was undoubtedly the civic buildings for Brasília, the planned city that has served as Brazil’s capital since 1960.

Rem Koolhaas

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations CCTV 02 800x533

Born in Rotterdam in 1945, Rem Koolhaas is one of the best architects of his generation, not only as a building designer but also as an architectural theorist. He is best known for the massive Central China Television Headquarters in Beijing, China, a 44-story möbius-strip of a structure that appears to loop in on itself (the locals refer to it as “big boxer shorts”).

Throughout his entire minimalist love when it comes to interior design, Vincenzo De Cotiis designer another masterpiece right in the heart of sunny Tuscany. With his minimalist flair, Vincenzo de Cotiis has added a contemplative contemporary design layer to the lived-in walls of an 18th-century Tuscan villa. With his signature merging of modernity and the monastic not only on the modern interior design ideas but on the art furniture as well, the Italian architect and artist Vincenzo de Cotiis has refreshed the early-18th century villa, transforming it from decaying grandeur to a softly luminous 21st-century vision of raw romance.

“I had been in lockdown for two months. I was isolating between my home and my studio in Milan, and was always with my wife, Claudia Rose. Luckily, creativity can’t be stopped by the lockdown and I was focused more than ever on my new projects and ideas” says Vincenzo De Cotiis.

Part of the appeal of the sweeping four-story escape lies in its solid and reassuring embrace of natural materials. De Cotiis has intuitively balanced their old-as-time allure with handcrafted contemporary pieces that look boldly futuristic but are informed by Italian design traditions. The designer maintains true to his taste but always following the current interior design trends and that is how his big luxury design creations come to life and do the wonders of those that step inside of them.

“I’m constantly thinking about how to improve interiors. I believe that good design helps us live better. It’s a reflection of who we are. Going forward, it will be a challenging time for the field of design and I can imagine that a highly selective market will leave only unique creators who have something valuable to say standing” says Vincenzo De Cotiis.

This special interior design project reflects the essence of Denis Košutić’s work, which can be seen as an anti-traditional perception of the role of architecture in the modern world. For this interior designer and architect, architecture is a subject of consumptions, instead of a monument for eternity. According to this, Denis redesigned a baroque Austrian Palace, giving it a modern approach. Boca do Lobo was part of the project, providing this interior designer, luxury furniture and sculptural pieces that served as an independent and strong character in the theatre play.

Abraham Menéndez (Abe the Ape) , ilustrador, ceramista y personaje locuaz y crítico y comedor de Risketos

James Aman and John Meeks designed a space where their imagination could spread its wings and fly over the roof. Over the past decades, the ELLE Decor A-List design duo’s clientele has predominantly consisted of art collectors, including the owners of this Palm Beach vacation house. The Washington, D.C.–based couple, who had hired the duo to design their city house, explained that they were looking for luxurious, timeless interiors in Palm Beach that wouldn’t compete with their Ai Weiwei paintings and Jeff Koons modern art sculpture.

“Our old house was traditional in an old Florida sense, with lots of chintzes. We were ready for something different—an elegant beach house” says the wife, who loves throwing cocktail parties and dinners with her husband, a real estate developer.

Decor that was elegant, while also amenable to colorful abstract works, muddy footprints, and spilled drinks, was a tall order, but one to which the designers happily rose for this luxury home. Following the latest interior design ideas, Aman and Meeks employed their signature restrained, neutrals-oriented palette throughout the home decor.

The clients expressed a desire to have everything in a calm and rich color palette, and the interior designer fulfilled that whish by combining wooden elements, marble tiles, bronze profiles, glass, leather, fabrics, and gold. Entering the office design there’s a big white conference table from i4 Mariani s.r.l, with a gorgeous chandelier from Sans Souci designed to follow the ceiling’s opening structure. Spotless, bright, and elegant is how we could describe this stylish and fresh office design by Sicilia Shine from Finesse Art & Design Bureau.

This one-room project has a low and contemporary ceiling, which the designer used to their advantage and gave it an even more luxurious touch with two showstopping chandeliers.

The refined work of Sicilia, through an attentive dedication to details, reaches its apogee within this contemporary project, flowing into an inspiring opulent office design in the city of Limassol, Cyprus. There is a geometric tempo throughout the design, with straight lines and smooth rounded paths.

Right beside this area, there’s a sitting lounge space. This space is filled with opulent Boca do Lobo furniture, from the center table and sofa to the sconces and the side table. Taking center stage, the Lapiaz Center Table brings sophistication vibe to the room and combines perfectly with the Imperfectio Sofa and Imperfectio Armchairs around it, which are the expression of imperfect aesthetic, the appeal of that which is authentic art that is truer to life. The gold and discreet Soleil Sconces on the wall were carefully chosen to combine with this sumptuous scenario, and the Monet Side Table also marks his shy yet gorgeous presence. In the round ceiling, an exuberant chandelier from LUXXU illuminates the space and gives a classic touch.

To give an even more luxurious sense to this office design there’s an amazing gold luxury safe that is impossible not to be fascinated by.  Influenced by the California Gold Rush, the Millionaire Safe is also a statement piece by Boca do Lobo designed to cause an impression. Built-in a Mahogany structure and gold-plated polished brass frame with several dents, it sparks both interest and imagination reminding the vault robbery attempts in the old west.

Sicilia Shine collaborated on this project with the furniture retailer Deloudis, based in Greece, which in turn provided photographs for this project, taken by Christos Papantoniou, a commercial photographer based in Cyprus. She also collaborated with a local carpentry firm P.P Custom Décor to execute all carpentry works. The architectural lighting was by Delta Lights and it was also installed in an automation system by Crestron.

When searching for a more secluded location for a getaway home, this family settled on the Lebanon mountains to set up a luxury retreat, the only thing missing? The keen eye of an incredible interior designer such as Thierry Lemaire.

From the infinity pool, swimmers can take in Beirut, about 30 miles to the southwest.

Dominated by gnarled limestone formations, the immediate surroundings are moonlike and magical. The landscaping of the garden was overseen by Vladimir Djurovic, whose most sweeping gesture was the relocation of excavated rocks to create a stalagmite-style screen for the pool by the luxury retreat’s main entrance. The house’s architect, Raëd Abillama, meanwhile, chose to clad the ground-level façade with slabs of stone from the property. It took local artisans two years to assemble them.

“This house was conceived by two people with very different personalities,” Nicolas Garzouzi remarks of the luxury retreat he shares with his wife, Michèle, and their two sons in the Lebanese ski resort of Faqra. “Nicolas is very rigorous and never leaves anything to chance,” notes their interior designer, the Paris based Thierry Lemaire.

Landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic used rocks excavated during construction to create a craggy wall at the entrance. of this luxury retreat.

In contrast to the rectilinearity of the architecture in this luxury retreat, much of the furniture design is sculptural and curvaceous. Examples include the topographical Pyrenees sofa by Fredrikson Stallard in the living room, the meandering Massimiliano Locatelli dining table, and the leather-clad bar fitted with stirrups, which Michèle commissioned from Lebanese designers David/Nicolas.
