Inspiration and Ideas brings you a select guide to the Best Architects Of All Time and their iconic creations. Architecture has always distinguished itself from other art forms because it plays a functional as well as an aesthetic role, offering shelter, of course, but also shaping our daily experiences.

Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí spent his entire career in Barcelona, where he built all of his projects, the most iconic creation being the 1883 cathedral known as La Sagrada Familia, still under construction today. Gaudí’s work would go on to have a tremendous impact on subsequent generations of modernists.

Frank Lloyd Wright

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations SolomonRGuggenheimMuseum

Wright revolutionized 20th-century architect, and his midwestern upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his sensibility and becoming a staple as one of the best architects of modern times. Inspired by the low-lying building that dotted the American plains, Wright created the Prairie House style as a reaction to the prevailing Victorian aesthetic, which emphasized dark decor, and busy embellishments both inside and out. In its stead, Wright employed clean geometries with an emphasis on horizontal planes. Later in his career, Wright would embrace curvilinear elements, a shift that found its most celebrated expression in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Mies Van der Rohe

354 seagram

Famously holding to the proposition that “less is more,” German architect Mies Van der Rohe stripped architecture to elemental geometric forms, pointing the way to Minimalism. He banished all traces of ornamentation, using the innate qualities of materials such as steel and plate glass to define the look of his buildings. One of his most iconic creations is the Seagram’s tower in New York.

Richard Rogers

Pompidou Center

When the Pompidou Center first opened in 1977, it was considered the epitome of a trend at the time known variously as High Tech and Structural Expressionism. British architect Richard Rogers was a leading proponent of the style. This building, designed as Paris’s central institution for Modern and contemporary art, suggests a structure turning inside out, with its heating and plumbing systems worn as the facade—which also features a glass-enclosed outdoor escalator climbing the height of the building.

Frank Gehry

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations el edificio guggenheim bilbao 1

This West Coast architect is undoubtedly one of the best architects in the world right now, thanks to his 1997 design for the Guggenheim Museum branch in Bilbao, Spain. Though Gehry was already well-established in his field as the auteur billowing forms that seem to defy gravity and the logic of conventional construction methods, The Guggenheim Bilbao remains the finest example of his iconic work.

Norman Foster

The Gherkin

A fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, British architect Norman Foster worked early in career as an associate of Buckminster Fuller, the noted visionary and inventor of the geodesic dome. The latter’s tessellated pattern of triangular forms must have made an impression on the young Foster since his most iconic creations feature similar surface treatments for their facades, The Gherkin, a commercial skyscraper in London’s financial district that opened in 2004.

Santiago Calatrava

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations Heintges WTCTransHub 13

The work of this Spanish architect has been described as Neofuturist, although sci-fi baroque might be closer to describing it. His buildings often resemble the ribcages of extinct robotic dinosaurs, if such things existed. His projects definitely attracted worldwide attention—and garnered a reputation for massive cost overruns. Nonetheless, there’s no denying that Calatrava is one of the best architects working today, as his most iconic creation—the Transit Hub for the World Trade Center—attests.

Zaha Hadid

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations 190311 18 31 50 5DSR7031

One of the few women to have risen to the level of starchitect—and the first ever to win architecture’s version of the Oscar, the Pritzker PrizeZaha Hadid was known for futuristic designs that employed curving, swooping lines more suitable for UFOs than buildings. Though she built extensively around the world, she has only one completed project—a luxury condo in Chelsea—in New York City.

Oscar Niemeyer

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations 1200px Congresso do Brasil

The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was one of the key figures in the development of the midcentury modernist design. Anticipating the work of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, Niemeyer employed bold curvilinear forms at a time when the boxy International Style reigned and Mies Van der Rohe’s proposition that “less is more” was the mantra of the architectural field. Niemeyer was part of the design team behind the U.N. Building in New York City, but his most famous creation was undoubtedly the civic buildings for Brasília, the planned city that has served as Brazil’s capital since 1960.

Rem Koolhaas

The Best Architects Of All Time And Their Iconic Creations CCTV 02 800x533

Born in Rotterdam in 1945, Rem Koolhaas is one of the best architects of his generation, not only as a building designer but also as an architectural theorist. He is best known for the massive Central China Television Headquarters in Beijing, China, a 44-story möbius-strip of a structure that appears to loop in on itself (the locals refer to it as “big boxer shorts”).

This year there is something special: the redesign of the striking boutique crafted once again by acclaimed international interior architect Pierre Yovanovitch, who has a long-standing relationship with the villa and its associated festivals.

Candy Colored Creations Pierre Yovanovitch For Design Parade Hy res

For art and architecture lovers, Hyères is a gem of the French Riviera and its Villa Noailles, in particular, a cultural trove. Originally built in the 1920s by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens for modern art patrons Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, the home is now a thriving arts center. This July, the Design Parade Hyères, an annual spotlight of up-and-coming talent held at the villa, celebrated its 15th anniversary.

After serving as jury president of the 2018 Design Parade Toulon, Pierre Yovanovitch redesigned the interior of the Hyères boutique in 2019 and again in 2020. For both iterations, Yovanovitch took Villa Noailles unique Cubist garden, which, he says, “occupies a strange space between garden and architecture,” as his launching point. Emulating the plot’s square and rectangular plantings are geometric, in-laid architectural elements, which give the boutique’s products a shadowbox surround.

“It is the type of place where one thinks that one should have been there at the time and been a part of the story” – Pierre Yovanovitch

Playing off of the garden’s use of primary colors, Pierre Yovanovitch transformed the interior with his signature candy-toned hues, its 2020 palette even bolder than the year prior.

“We incorporated variations of blue hues to add a sense of depth and tranquility to the space and create a serene backdrop to allow for the colorful vignettes to really stand out,” he says.

While a central table serves as a royal-blue focal point, the walls and accents are in more nuanced shades like muted turquoise, seafoam green, cotton-candy pink, and salmon.

“I wanted the layout and colours of the space to showcase the displayed design objects to their fullest potential while also offering a lively, joyful area for people to convene.”

Graziella Semerciyan gallery curated this year’s product assortment, which includes works by former Design Parade finalists, as well as those from sister festivals supporting fashion, photography, and more. The range of objects on offer includes dark ceramics made by Hélène Labadie that are inspired by those of 1950s masters like Jacques Blin, ecological swimsuits by Atelier Bartavelle x Twice Studio, and a new beach towel collaboration from Villa Noailles, artist Florent Groc, and La Serviette Paris.

The thoughtful mix of offerings is synonymous with Hyères itself, where myriad styles and eras delightfully coexist.

The city is a source of amazement; it is a true palimpsest of many periods, starting from the most ancient to medieval to the Belle Epoque and the modernist,” says Pierre Yovanovitch. “What I like most about it is that it has not been gentrified like many cities on the coast and has kept its quintessential multicultural Mediterranean character. In addition, it is located on one of the nicest parts of the coast with marvels such as Porquerolles a stone’s throw away.

The Villa Noailles Pierre Yovanovitch–designed boutique will be open until the International Festival of Fashion, Photography, and Fashion Accessories in April 2021.

When mother and son design duo, Kathleen and Tommy Clements, plus Waldo Fernandez, found out their next superstar client, was none other than supermodel of the world, Kendall Jenner, they didn’t know what to expect. For her Los Angeles home, being a 24-year-old supermodel, she was expected to have a “flashy” style, so when Kendall Jenner revealed a more bohemian and funky than the rest of her family, it came as a surprise.

“Being who she is, we thought Kendall might gravitate toward something more flashy, more va-va-voom. I think we were all thrilled to discover that she has taste beyond her years,” says Kathleen. Fernandez punctuates the sentiment: “There are plenty of people we know who have travelled extensively and been exposed to so much but don’t absorb anything. Kendall is different. She takes everything in and is confident about the things that resonate with her,” he says.

Kendall Jenner made few structural changes to the existing architecture of this Los Angeles home, instead of repurposing two of the five bedrooms into a pair of proper glam and fitting rooms. The living room perhaps best epitomizes the young model’s predilection for warm, organic textures, earthy tones, and eminently comfortable furnishings. With a cozy fireplace anchoring one end of the space, two broad sofas, stocked with a range of pillows in vintage textiles, offer ample room for visiting friends and family.

In contrast to the subdued palette of the furniture and finishes, Kendall Jenner’s collection of contemporary art—which includes works by Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, and Sterling Ruby—adds some serious jolts of color to the mix. Just off the entry, a signature James Turrell ovoid wall sculpture, animated by shifting, computer-programmed LED lights, greets visitors with a dreamy chromatic display.

Although Kendall Jenner confesses that she’s still new to the contemporary art world, Fernandez emphasizes that her interest is far from superficial. “Kendall wasn’t just checking off names on a list or blindly following the advice of an adviser. She picked things that meant something to her, things she had a gut reaction to,” the designer notes.

In the sitting area of her bedroom, a Tracey Emin neon sculpture faces off unexpectedly with a pair of 18th-century Italian painted door panels. “I grew up with those panels in the various homes we lived in. I asked for them when my mom was cleaning out one of her storage spaces. They bring me back to my childhood,Kendall Jenner says.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished here. This is the first home I’ve done completely, and I think it’s a genuine reflection of who I am and what I like,” Kendall Jenner says. “In the end, I’m still a young female in L.A., just trying to have some fun.”

For Kendall Jenner, who has spoken publicly about her battle with anxiety and panic attacks, the panels, like the arts-and-crafts room she installed in the Los Angeles home’s erstwhile home theatre, are simply one more facet of her efforts to fashion a soothing refuge from the hurly-burly of her professional life under the harsh spotlight of runway shows and paparazzi.

Sometimes, reminiscing about the client’s roots truly enhances the entire ambiance and does it all, and this contemporary house that we are about to welcome you inside has it all – a tranquil aesthetic with familiar vibes, meet The House with Poise – Indore.

This 28,000 private residence designed by Khushalani Associates is located in Bicholi, an upcoming exurb of Indore (akin to what the Hamptons are to New York). By virtue of being a business leader in his industry, the client is a globe trotter, albeit with strong Indian values. The challenge was to cater to his Indian sensitivities, more
specifically, towards Vaastu compliance, while keeping his Ecumenical tastes in mind. The result is a
contemporary house with strong Indian roots, instagrammable interior design ideas yet livable, with functionality and aesthetics maintaining a fine balancing act.

“As a design studio, we are neither maximalists nor minimalists. We strongly believe that the décor of eachspace should be dictated by its use and the personality of its user. Each area in this house is an expression of this belief while attempting to keep an overall stylistic coherence.”

For this luxury home, the architecture firm designed that wood would be the basic inspiration for the entire project. Due to the earthy tones introduced into this contemporary house, it was logical that furniture design pieces in the same palette would be the perfect fit. Boca do Lobo‘s Infinity Console Table was the perfect match when the firm was looking for that statement piece that would give a striking effect when entering this incredible abode.

The architecture of the house was devised in such a way that it is adequate light for the areas; in a house that has wall to wall, full-height windows it becomes essential to control sunlight in a way that it is welcome and not something one struggles to shun.

¡I love you Honey Bunny!.

Parking y Capilla.

The Playroom.
